You've really got to love Snopes. I know I sure do. Most often, their denials are so laughable as to amount to validations. And sometimes, they just can't see the sun right over their heads.
They've updated their comments since I first read that article a decade ago (yes, I've been reading Snopes that long).
They had originally concluded that, "Things were different back then."
Gee. Ya think?!
But they removed that comical comment.
Pity.

Transponder codes and IFF are an interesting and complicated aviation topic. Disabling or using a code other than the one you're supposed to be using is playing with fire, and bound to draw military attention. These people would have had to have known that. Unless they thought they'd made arrangements for it somehow.
I can hardly wait to learn more about it, but I'm not finding anything yet.

I hate interviews!
Especially over the phone, with no face-to-face communication cues. Few interviewers can pull it off well, and even fewer interviewees. And Tracy Beanz, as good as she is, is no better at this than anyone else.
That said, the Beanz is still one of the best amatuer investigators I've heard, and this exchange, wherein she brings a casual observer current on recent events, is an excellent way to bring most anyone up to speed on what's really going on in this country. So, I highly recommend this.

And you yought fat shaming was an absurd development in the west, where most fair-skinned people admire a healthy tan, in India, the admiration for fair skin is now being derided as dark shaming.
In a land with so many people, you can expect war to break out over this.
