More on Dolmens

He makes the same association with cairns and mounds that other do even though no one can offer any explanation for this. It's just an assumption, and a rash one, in my opinion.
He also claims that they would have originally been earth-banked or even buried, again without justification. As I said before, we've never found any of these buried, which only adds to the mystery.

Now, there is one other possibility, however remote, and that is that these dolmen served as air-burial platforms.
Air burials are an ancient practice which remains with us today. The famed Towers of Silence of the Zoroastrians are still used today. (You do NOT want to look up any more than that Wikipedia article.) (Trust me on this.)
But that only brings more questions.
Air-burials are believed to have originated in ancient mesopotamia as a possible solution to the slowly increasing salinity of the land, which was, in turn, slowly destroying the land's once legendary fertility. Supposedly, our ancestors noticed that, wherever people were buried, plants didn't grow very well.
See? And I'll bet you thought we made good fertilizer. Turns out we don't; we're much too salty. Bury enough people in the same place, and you ruin the soil for generations.
Some claim, however, that this is where the practice of burying one's dead deep in the ground, or even in catacombs, originated. Catacombs are carved in rock, so there can be no contamination of the soil. But, if you can't dig down to rock, then you settle for several feet of soil, but, then, groundwater contamination becomes a problem, too.
There is one other opinion on this, though, and that is that the ancients were less concerned with soil salinity than they were with simple reverence and religious beliefs. And Gobekli Tepe certainly supports this idea. How? It was once believed by anthropologists that religion was an invention of mankind that came after civilization and specialization had allowed us to settle down and ponder on such things, but Goblekli Tepe was built before agriculture is believed to have existed, meaning that religion was a much more powerful and primal force in mankind than had previously been believed. Moreover, it is now believed that man's religious convictions may have been what brought about agriculture and civilization. And that changes a great deal.
But, according to that other hypothesis, birds had been seen as psychopomps since the beginning of time. And, as such, it would have been viewed as criminal to deny your loved ones their journey back to heaven by burying them in the ground.
Now, you may think it a strange thing to believe, perhaps even downright superstitious, but just consider how ingrained in our culture it is. Surely you've heard the old myth that storks bring babies to earth? That belief comes from the idea that birds are psychopomps, shuttling us between heaven and earth. And, just as storks brought us to earth, vultures would take us back home again, one bite at a time.
And that's not all. Just recall the two birds loosed from the ark by Noah, not to mention the 'dove' which brought the Holy Ghost to Jesus. As I said, birds have been preceived since the beginning of time as the angels which conduct us from above to below, and back again, as well as ferrying messages between heaven and earth in between.
This is also where the belief that angels have wings originated, recalling that similar biblical references came millennia after the fall.
So, if this was the purpose of the dolmen, then that certainly dates the tradition (7,000 years or older), if not the construction (which seems unlikely to have been so old). But it still leaves the question of where the builders went, not to mention why such a sacred place would have accommodated so few.
And that brings us full circle again to the idea that whoever built these were almost certainly just passing through.
But from where? And to where? And why did that tradition end once they got where they were going?
Or, recalling how many were found in Korea, did it end? (At least not right away.)

Aaand ... if you think all that only further evidence of religion's absurd, superstitious roots, as did Frazer, then you really need to reflect on the origins of baptism, circumcision, the sacrament, and even marriage. You might just be shocked at where they all really come from.

Not me, though! Believing as I do, such things only make perfect sense, and even strengthen my faith.
