Not everyone aspires to be Donald Trump. Some just want to understand the universe, or create powerful and moving art, or perfect an equation, or build a family. Genius has as many ways of expressing itself as there are human endeavors. Second, there's always the 'tall poppy syndrome', or, as Schoppenhauer put it, many possessed of great intelligence learn through harsh experience that it's wiser to pretend to be stupid. Or at least no smarter than anyone else. Finally, there is the curious fallacy of the presumption of advantage. This is what we see today with all this talk of 'white privilege', the presumption being that one's mere complexion is practically a guarantee of (otherwise) undeserved advantage. But just look at how many disadvantaged whites there are all over the world, especially in places like South Africa where, today, it's very nearly illegal to be white. As Sowell rightly points out, there are more factors involved in 'success' than IQ, but, along with forgetting to define success, he also forgets conscious opposition, and uncouscious disadvantage. For example, I have a relative who, while not stupid, is clearly no genius. And yet, she was practically handed a 'scholarship' (presumably based on one's scholastic prowess) for being female. I kid you not. In fact, even as far back as 1977, there were programs at even the most remote colleges for native Americans, foreigners, women, children of single mothers, orphans, minorities, veterans, the destitute, and handicapped of every stripe. Notably absent from all these programs was any support or even just encouragement for those actually gifted with superior intellect. Worse still, I, for example, being unable to afford college, or gain any employment for which I was qualified, or, bizarrely, for which I wasn't over-qualified (translation: The boss wasn't about to hire anyone with more brains than him lest he wound up working for them.) I submitted to the obvious course of my circumstances, and joined what was universally acknowledged as the most cerebral branch of the military: The Air Force. And yet, as soon as they actually found out that my test scores were neither a fluke nor the product of cheating, they wanted to discharge me for being too intelligent. Likewise the police. So what's a guy to do? It's literally been me and God against the world my entire life. So, when judging me a disappointment given my intelligence, a little perspective might be in order.
