(It's Jesus' day!)

Like father, like daughter

     I'm so proud!
Allow me to introduce you to my little Gabi-maus and her first published article.

She is probably the only other American fan of Peter Maffay and Herbert Grönemeyer besides me. At 11 or 12, having already translated much of my German playlist (yes, I'll eventually share those with you, too) into English so she could better enjoy them, she took it upon herself to translate Beowulf from the old English (trust me when I tell you that it's a foreign language) into modern English. On her own.
As her mother said, "The apple doesn't fall far from the cart."

A great quote

This comes from Humphrey Bogart's character, Alfred (Gloves) Donahue, in the 1942 film, All Through the Night, and it underscores that Hollywood, or at least some of it, used to have its head screwed on straight.

Franz Ebbing (he's the bad guy):
"It's a great pity, Mr. Donahue, that you and I should oppose each other. We have so much in common."
     Alfred (Gloves) Donahue (Bogie):
     "Yeah? How's that?"
     Franz Ebbing :
"You are a man of action. You take what you want, and so do we. You have no respect for democracy - neither do we. It's clear we should be allies."
     Alfred (Gloves) Donahue :
"It's clear you are screwy. I've been a registered Democrat ever since I could vote. I may not be Model Citizen Number One, but I pay my taxes, wait for traffic lights, and buy 24 tickets to the Policeman's Ball. Brother, don't get me mixed up in no league that rubs out innocent bakers."

Ok, so, how does this evince sanity on the part of Hollywood? Just look at what the villain is suggesting: They are both crooks, robbers, outlaws. And what does Bogie say? (Paraphrasing) Sure! Yeah! I'm a crook, too. I'm a Democrat, after all, and always have been, but I keep my criminality subtle, careful. I don't break rules just to break them. I obey what rules I have to in order to avoid unnecessary trouble. But that's a long way from murder.
Get it? Democrat = crook. And this in 1942, 9 years into the Presidency of FDR. And there were a LOT of warning voices back then. Just look it up. FDR was like the Barack Obama of his day. There were alarms going off everywhere. WWII was used to (and probably even deliberately caused just to) rally a skeptical nation behind him. And even Hollywood knew it.

From my playlist

I love pretty much everything about this song and video. Can't recommend the movie, but just look at her eyebrows. Have you ever seen such articulated eyebrows?

Does she remind you of anyone? (Hint: See Saturday's post.)

By the way, I'm hosting this on my own site because Vevo blocks youtube links from 3rd party sites like mine. So, if you find playback a little slow, you can find it on youtube right here.
