More Missing Time!
If you thought Gary Kasporov's new chronology, or Gunnar Heinsohn's Heinsohn Horizon to be a lot of lunatic fringe ranting, you should know that it's a very real thing. All of science is currently holding its breath for the final (for now) word to come out of the global dendochronology project.
The Strange Race to Track Down a Missing Billion Years
Why are they holding their breath?
Because early results keep suggesting that we've not only miscalculated the dates of prehistory, but of history, too.
In other words, the faithful have been as wrong about the date and nature of the flood as the worshippers of the great and abominable church of Orthodox Science have been about the age of the dinosaurs.
I mean, you do know that the earth isn't from here, right? Even Brigham Young said so, in conference. And, if we're not from here, and really were once a satellite of Saturn, as much myth suggests, then what was a year to us then? Saturn currently has a 30-year orbit. A thousand of Saturn's current years would be 30,000 of our own. But the Aztecs, and others, suggest that Saturn wasn't our only other sun. Jupiter was, too. In fact, the Aztecs say we're currently on our fifth sun, so who were the other two? Venus and Mars?
But, and for more important, is that the science industrial complex has built an entire religion of its own around its dating methods. And those methods have been increasing discredited with each new discovery. Should any of those methods crumble (and carbon dating, already on very shaky ground, looks like it will be the first to fall), then, not only are all the others necessarily suspect, but, literally, all of what we think of as science, will be upended.
Never fear, though. There are already bright minds standing by to fill every position about to be vacated, and I say vacated because, as the great Max Planck wrote, "science advances only one funeral at a time", which is to say that the advances I'm predicting will come suddenly but quietly. You almost won't notice it because it's a relatively slow process of the old guard retiring or passing away that makes way for a generation of minds with different, and better, ideas. And, once they become the majority, policy changes, usually without fanfare, breaking the log-jam that had kept them unfunded for so long.
It reminds me of my first semester of optics in college, versus my second semester. The information was so uniquely and completely different, that I actually had to ask the professor why we even bothered with the first semester. But he had no satisfying answer.
But I do. Now. In retrospect. That first semester didn't really teach us anything wrong. All that information was still applicable, to an extent. But it was too little information to complete the picture. You wouldn't have trotted off to start your own lens-making company with a head full of only the first semester's knowledge. The SECOND semester, however, was another matter. You could have gone into business with that.
Lessons leared? NEVER think that you know it all, that you've fully plumbed the depths of any subject. And never think no one else has.
And so what? What of it?
It's like thinking you understand the way the stars move, and then along comes Nicolaus Copernicas, and upends everything, showing you more than you knew before, all with a simple shift in perspective, getting a higher view, a bigger picture.
And I am very certain that our horizons are about to get broadened.
